In an interview with the press on May 16, Director of the Moscow Thermal Institute (MTI), Yuri Solomonov, said that this unit is focusing on developing a new generation of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) to be equipped on the Russian Navy's strategic nuclear submarines.

“In the next two weeks, we will hold a very important meeting on MTI's new product. It is a new generation of SLBMs,” Mr. Y. Solomonov said.

According to Mr. Y. Solomonov, this action follows the visit of Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu to MTI on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the institute. During the visit, Mr. S. Shoigu asked MTI to develop a new generation of SLBMs based on existing ICBMs such as Topol and Yars. The new generation of SLBMs must have superior tactical and technical characteristics compared to similar weapons currently available in the world.

Mr. Y. Solomonov has not revealed any information about the new SLBM line.

MTI is known for developing famous Russian ICBM and SLBM lines such as Topol/Topol-M, Yars and Bulava. MTI has a lot of experience in developing solid-fuel missiles with short deployment and recovery time and high "stealth" properties.

The Russian Navy's strategic submarine force is currently equipped with two SLBM lines, Sineva and Bulava. Of these, Bulava will be the main offensive weapon for many years to come. The P30 3M30 Bulava-30 (the name used in international treaties is RSM-56 and SS-NX-30 according to NATO classification) uses a 3-stage propulsion engine structure. While the first 2 engine stages of the Bulava missile use solid fuel, the third stage uses liquid fuel to create acceleration and maneuverability for the warheads carried.

This product developed by the Moscow Thermal Institute has a range of 8,000 km and carries 6-10 nuclear warheads with a destructive power of 100-150 kilotons each. In particular, the warheads of the Bulava missile are capable of self-maneuvering their flight trajectory to reduce the possibility of being intercepted. The Bulava missile is designed as a strategic weapon for the Borey-class nuclear submarines (project 995/995A) of the Russian Navy.
