Russian electromagnetic missile can destroy any electronic device

The Russian Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern (KRET) said on September 28 that it is developing a weapon that uses extremely powerful UHF radio pulses to destroy all electronic devices within a radius of 3.5 km, turning them into "scrap metal", Sputnik reported.

Russian media previously claimed that the country had completed a prototype of the Alabuga electromagnetic missile equipped with a UHF transmitter. However, Vladimir Mikheev, advisor to the vice president of KRET, confirmed that Alabuga is just the code name of a series of future radio-electronic weapons research projects.

"Such weapons can cause a lot of damage to the enemy, from disablingtemporary"Weapons systems to the complete destruction of all electronic equipment on the battlefield. Experience and data from the Alabuga project are being applied to the development of artillery shells, bombs and electromagnetic missiles," Mr. Mikheev said.

The UHF transmitter in the Alabuga project can emit an electromagnetic pulse as strong as a nuclear explosion, but only targets electronic equipment, does not create radioactive dust or destroy infrastructure. KRET representative commented that Russia is not the only country investing in electromagnetic weapons, powers such as the US and China are also researching this field.
