Closing the first instance trial on August 1, the Hanoi People's Court decided to sentence Duong Van Chi (born in 1993, residing in Hamlet 11, An Hoa Commune, Kim Son, Ninh Binh) to death for the crime of "Murder". The victim murdered by this thief was a young woman named Vu Hien Luong (born in 1997), from Thai Binh.

In addition to the above-mentioned particularly serious crimes, the Hanoi Court also sentenced Duong Van Chi to 5 years in prison for “Robbery” and 18 months in prison for “Theft”. Combining the sentences for all 3 crimes, the subject who specializes in stealing property for a living must serve a total sentence of death.

The thief who killed the young girl looked fierce when he was brought to court.

Opening the court, the first instance panel clarified that despite his superior physical strength, Duong Van Chi did not work honestly to earn a living, but lived a vagrant life and often prowled around to steal property.

As before, on the evening of October 31, 2015, the defendant went to a motel in Mo Lao ward, Ha Dong district, rented a room with the intention of breaking into the rooms next door to steal property.

When he first arrived at the motel in Mo Lao ward, Chi left his belongings at the reception desk, then wandered out to Ha Dong flower garden to play and have dinner. At around 10pm the same day, the thief returned to the motel and chose room 702 as his place to stay for the night.

After a good night's sleep, at around 3am on November 1, 2015, Chi woke up to start searching for property to steal. After a few minutes of looking around, he noticed a light coming from the room next door, where Ms. Vu Hien Luong (the daughter of the motel owner) was sleeping.

With just a few very professional moves, the thief quickly entered the 18-year-old girl's bedroom through a hole near the attic. However, as soon as he touched the ground, Chi's foot hit the bed frame, causing Ms. Luong to suddenly wake up.

Panicked by the sudden presence of a strange figure in the room, the daughter of the motel owner screamed for help. However, as soon as Luong shouted, the thief jumped up and covered her mouth.

Being scratched and struggled by the teenage girl, Chi immediately grabbed an electric cord in the room and strangled her until she lay motionless. Knowing that the daughter of the motel owner was dead, the thief quickly took the iPhone 4S, locked Ms. Luong's room door and returned to room 702.

At 4am the same day, Chi leisurely checked out of the motel and immediately took a car to Ninh Binh city to sell the phone he had just stolen from Ms. Luong for 300,000 VND. On the same day, the thief returned to Trung Van ward, Nam Tu Liem district, and continued to rent a room at another motel.

Then, through the press, the thief heard that Ms. Luong had died and that the authorities were actively searching for the murderer, so he immediately fled to Ho Chi Minh City. However, just one week later, the thief who killed the 18-year-old girl in the middle of the night was arrested by the police and brought to justice.

Brought to court, the "thief" who murdered the young girl also confessed that from January to November 2015, Chi also committed 4 thefts at several restaurants, motels and once committed the crime on the road from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.

Notably, before murdering Ms. Luong, on October 28, 2015, Chi had rented a room from the victim’s family. That night, he sneaked into the girl’s bedroom and stole 240,000 VND, then “stopped by” another room to “steal” a laptop from a guest staying at the motel.

Evaluating the defendant's testimony, the victims' testimony, and reviewing the case file, the Hanoi People's Court of First Instance affirmed that the indictment charging the defendant simultaneously with the crimes of "Murder", "Robbery" and "Theft of property" is completely well-founded and in accordance with the law.

Finally, considering that the thief had lost all humanity and could no longer be educated or reformed, the Hanoi People's Court decided to sentence Duong Van Chi to a general sentence of permanent removal from society.
