According to Reuters, on February 6, China and Thailand agreed to strengthen military ties over the next five years, ranging from enhanced intelligence sharing to combating transnational crime.

Thai Defense Minister, General Prawit Wongsuwan, told reporters: "China has agreed to help Thailand strengthen its national defense and provide technological advice to ensure Thailand's national security. China will not interfere in Thailand's political affairs but will provide political support and help maintain relations at all levels. That is China's policy."

According to Minister Prawit, Thailand and China have also agreed to increase joint exercises between their air forces and strengthen comprehensive military cooperation over the next 3-5 years.

The agreement was reached during a two-day visit to Bangkok by Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan, amid the Thai military government's efforts to garner Beijing's support as the West expressed concerns about Bangkok's slow pace in restoring democracy.
