ThaiBinh Seed: Many excellent rice varieties for the spring crop of 2025.

The rice varieties TBR 97, TBR 87, and TBR 88 have become dominant.

According to a representative of ThaiBinh Seed Co., Ltd.In Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, the TBR97 rice variety is a copyrighted product of ThaiBinh Seed Group, recognized as a national variety since August 1, 2022. This is a purebred rice variety sensitive to temperature changes, with wide adaptability and tolerance to intensive cultivation.

According to the Ea Súp District Agricultural Extension Station (Đắk Lắk province), after conducting a trial in the spring of 2024, the model rice field did not fall over because the TBR97 rice variety has a thick, strong, and healthy stem, and a moderate plant height, making it quite resistant to lodging.

The TBR97 rice variety exhibits good pest and disease resistance, vigorous growth, and beautiful green foliage, with virtually no pest or disease damage. The rice plants flower quickly and uniformly, producing large, long panicles with many spikelets, densely packed grains, and fairly large, long, bright yellow grains. It has a high percentage of filled grains and produces delicious cooked rice.

“Overall, the TBR97 rice variety is suitable for the natural conditions in Ea Súp district. It requires less seed, grows vigorously, is less susceptible to pests and diseases, and yields high productivity with good rice quality. Therefore, farmers should confidently introduce the TBR97 rice variety into large-scale production, as this variety has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development since 2022. We request that local leaders provide guidance and support to ensure the widespread cultivation of the TBR97 rice variety in the district's communes in the coming time,” said the head of the Ea Súp District Agricultural Extension Station.

The TBR97 rice variety has a short growing season, lasting from 105 to 110 days in the winter-spring crop.The summer-autumn crop takes 95-100 days; it is highly resistant to unfavorable weather conditions and pests and diseases, especially blast and bacterial leaf blight.

The rice plant is sturdy, highly resistant to lodging, has strong tillering, concentrated flowering, dense panicles, and a high percentage of filled grains; the average height of the rice plant is 90-95cm, able to withstand strong winds... The TBR97 rice variety yields high productivity, reaching 70-75 quintals/hectare, and with good intensive farming practices, it can reach 90 quintals/hectare; the rice grains are translucent, the cooked rice is soft, flavorful, and fragrant.

"The TBR97 rice variety is suitable for intensive cultivation, has strong tillering, sturdy stems, moderate plant height, and a high grain filling rate per ear, making it suitable for both cropping seasons per year. In particular, the TBR97 variety tolerates hot weather, resists lodging, and is very suitable for summer-autumn cropping. The TBR97 variety is less susceptible to pests and diseases. Currently, the communes in the district are widely cultivating the TBR97 rice variety, and it is virtually disease-free, requiring very little use of pesticides," a representative from ThaiBinh Seed Co., Ltd. - Central - Central Highlands region informed.

The TBR97 rice variety has been tested in Nghe An province since 2022 in Do Luong district. According to the Nghe An Agricultural Extension Center, in comparison, the TBR97 variety showed good growth and development in the same area, was suitable for the soil and climate conditions, and exhibited better resistance than other varieties grown under similar conditions. In particular, it showed very good resistance to rice blast disease; while other varieties grown under the same conditions required 3-4 applications of fungicide, the TBR97 variety did not require any application.

The growing season for the spring crop of 2022 was 122 days, 5-7 days shorter than other rice varieties in the area, allowing for two harvests per year. Field harvest results showed a very high yield (64-72 quintals/hectare). This rice variety is now being grown in many districts of Nghe An province.

TBR87 rice variety is a temperature-sensitive variety with wide adaptability and a short growing season: In the northern provinces: Spring crop from 120 - 130 days, autumn crop from 100 - 105 days; Central, South Central and Central Highlands provinces: Winter-spring crop from 105 - 110 days, summer-autumn crop from 95 - 100 days; In the southern provinces from 95 - 100 days.

The plant is 100-120cm tall, compact in shape, with clustered, bright yellow flowers. The weight of 1,000 seeds is 22.0-24.0 grams.

This rice variety possesses genes resistant to blast and bacterial leaf blight, making it highly resistant to these diseases. It yields high productivity, averaging 70-75 quintals/hectare. With good intensive farming practices, yields can reach 90-95 quintals/hectare. TBR87 rice has translucent grains, soft and flavorful cooked rice, and a distinctive aroma.

Another pure rice variety successfully developed by ThaiBinh Seed, named TBR88, possesses several unique characteristics: it can be grown in two seasons per year, it is a temperature-sensitive variety, and it tolerates intensive cultivation.

The milling yield is 80-83%; the polished rice yield is 65-73%; and the whole grain yield is 75-80%. The rice grains are slender, and the cooked rice is delicious, soft, flavorful, and has a light aroma.

It is known that the growing season of TBR88 rice variety in the northern provinces is: Spring crop from 130-135 days, autumn crop from 105-110 days. In the South Central coastal provinces: Winter-spring crop from 115-120 days, summer-autumn crop from 100-105 days. In the Central Highlands provinces: Winter-spring crop from 120-125 days and summer-autumn crop from 100-105 days.

Many superior plant varieties

According to ThaiBinh Seed, for this year's winter-spring crop season alone, the group conducted large-scale trials with a total of over ten tons of various crop seeds, comprising 22 varieties. These included 14 pure rice varieties, 6 hybrid rice varieties, and 2 vegetable varieties. A total of 200 demonstration sites were established across 45 provinces and cities nationwide. Popular varieties include TBR 225, BC15, and Thai Xuyen 111 rice. In addition, many corn and vegetable varieties were also tested.

Evaluations show that all rice varieties have good pest and disease resistance, and many varieties with resistance genes have demonstrated superiority in the field. Notably, yields are higher than other common varieties (averaging 65-70 quintals/hectare). Furthermore, the new rice varieties from ThaiBinh Seed all have a high percentage of whole grain rice (68-70%), good quality rice, soft texture, and a pleasant aroma, making them popular with farmers.

In addition, ThaiBinh Seed also owns the TBM135 hybrid glutinous corn variety, which has super-large ears and super-sticky kernels. This glutinous corn variety has a short growing season and can be planted year-round. The time from sowing to harvesting fresh ears is 70-80 days. The plant height and ear height are low, and the strong tripod root system helps the plant resist lodging well.

This corn variety grows vigorously, with green leaves that last until harvest, allowing for both fresh corn kernels and stalks/leaves for animal feed. It exhibits good pest and disease resistance, particularly against rust, a common disease that severely damages many glutinous corn varieties. Fresh corn yields are high: averaging 106-144 quintals/hectare under intensive cultivation.
