(Baonghean.vn) - The Con Dao prison system, where the French colonial regime and the American imperialists tortured countless patriots. This prison system is considered the largest in Southeast Asia, with 18 forced labor camps containing 127 cells; 2 isolated "Tiger Cages" - with 504 rooms and 44 solitary confinement cells; and 1 isolated "Cow Pen" area.
With the liberation of South Vietnam and the reunification of the country, Con Dao Prison was liberated, ending its 113-year existence. It is preserved as a testament to the barbaric crimes of colonialism, imperialism, and their collaborators. Con Dao Prison imprisoned nearly 200,000 revolutionary fighters and patriots, including over 20,000 who were tortured and starved to death. The Con Dao Prison complex also served as a place where revolutionary fighters and patriots transformed "a hell on earth" into a revolutionary school, demonstrating the courage of patriots and the tenacious, indomitable fighting spirit of communist fighters against the enemy.
