After 80 days of planting, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam and 160 households in 7 hamlets of Thanh Nho commune, Thanh Chuong district had a bumper sweet corn crop. This is the first year they have grown a short-term corn variety with large ears that can be harvested and sold right in the field instead of drying and collecting the seeds.

According to the initial preliminary acceptance of the locality, the average yield reached 7 quintals/sao. With the purchase price of 380 thousand VND/quintal, each sao of sweet corn brought in revenue of nearly 3 million VND/sao, a profit of over 600 thousand VND higher than normal corn.

Chi Tam said that growing this corn variety is as simple as other corn varieties. In addition, the company also provides seeds, technical guidance and guarantees the product. After harvesting, farmers have to pay for the seeds by deducting them from the product, so everyone is excited.

Sweet corn with the scientific name Hi-brix53, sourced from Thailand, is a product used to make fried corn with butter, corn soup in restaurants and used in many other foods. This corn variety has a growing period of 85-90 days. Through monitoring the growth process, farmers have found that this is a corn variety that grows well and has few pests and diseases.

According to Mr. Tran Phi Hung - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Chuong district: This is a direction to implement the "Project on restructuring the agricultural sector of Nghe An province" and the project "Developing a number of commodity crops to create raw material areas associated with processing and consumption of products in the period of 2016 - 2020" of Thanh Chuong district; is the result of the connection between enterprises and local authorities.

Growing sweet corn also has the outstanding advantage of not having to spend extra money on drying and threshing the seeds, and when harvesting, the stalks are still green so they can be used as animal feed. From the results of the first crop, Thanh Chuong will guarantee and direct Thanh Nho commune to contract planting the next crop and replicate the model throughout the district./.
