Being a land with many low hills and suitable climate, people in the mountainous communes of Thanh Chuong district have long grown oranges. The brands of orange peel, Cat Ngan lotus orange and Tong Doi clean orange have been known to consumers in and outside the province.
As a person who has grown oranges very successfully, 5 years ago, Mr. Vo Van Ky in Hamlet 10, Thanh Nho Commune, along with some other households, visited and surveyed the characteristics of the V2 orange variety at the Central Fruit Tree Breeding Institute and some models in the North. After the trip, he brought back 50 trees to try and plant them successfully. Up to now, the oranges are growing well.
Mr. Ky excitedly said: V2 is a sweet orange variety, fragrant, sweet, few seeds, beautiful yellow color, good disease resistance, high ability to flower and fruit. The biggest advantage is that it ripens late, can be stored on the tree for a long time without reducing quality. If traditional oranges and lemons only leave fruit on the tree until the end of November, V2 oranges can be stored until the beginning of January, so they are easy to consume, bringing in much higher income.

With the outstanding advantages of V2 orange trees, Thanh Chuong district has conducted research and preliminary summary. According to statistics of the whole district, people have planted over 200 hectares. On this basis, on April 8, 2016, the District People's Committee issued Project No. 675 on "Developing some commodity crops, creating raw material areas associated with processing and consumption of products in the period of 2016-2020", in which the whole district strives to have 500 hectares of V2 oranges by 2020.
This winter crop, the district will plant 20 hectares in 4 communes including Thanh Hoa, Thanh Nho, Thanh Duc, Hanh Lam and Thanh Thuy, which have suitable land funds and have been successfully grown.
The District People's Council has also issued a Resolution to promulgate support policies. Accordingly, if planted in the planning area and ensuring from 1000 m2Orange growers will receive support of 10,000 VND/seedling and 5 million VND/ha of land preparation.
To help localities successfully implement the planting of V2 oranges, Mr. Nguyen Van Que - Chairman of Thanh Chuong District People's Committee said: The district is determined to plant 20 hectares of oranges this autumn, currently nearly 100 households in communes in the planning area have registered. The communes are urgently organizing and directing the digging of holes and training on technical procedures for planting and caring for the people.
Orange growing techniques V2 - Digging holes: the hole for planting oranges should be 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8m or 1 x 1 x 1m in size. When digging the hole, make sure to place the topsoil on one side and the bottomsoil on the other side. After digging the hole, let it dry for at least 1 month, and sprinkle 1kg of lime powder around the hole. In areas with hard, poorly drained soil, a deep hole can become a puddle of rainwater, causing root suffocation, and drainage measures are needed. - Prepare base fertilizer: Each hole is fertilized with 50-80kg of decomposed manure + 1kg of P2O5 + 5-10kg of coal slag mixed with the bottom layer of soil and put into the hole, topsoil + 100g of urea + 100g of K2O5. After planting, cover the base to prevent water evaporation and weeds, cover 10cm from the base. - Take care of + Weeding:The grass around the base of the tree should be removed. The road should only be cut to retain moisture, prevent soil erosion and provide a habitat for beneficial insects in the orange garden. +Fertilization: Annually, add 30-40kg of manure or organic fertilizer/tree combined with chemical fertilizer. How to fertilize: Dig a 25-30cm deep trench along the tree canopy, fertilize, then cover with soil and water. + Pruning to create canopy: After the tree has stabilized, cut the top branches to create canopy for the tree to develop into 3-4 level I branches in 4 directions, from each level I branch leave 3-4 level II branches... |
