Establishment of Quang Tri Citadel Soldiers Association in 1972

(Baonghean.vn) - On December 13, at the Hall of Military Region IV, the Organizing Committee for the establishment of the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Soldiers' Association held the Congress of Delegates of the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Soldiers' Association in 1972, Nghe An province.

Attending the congress were comrades: Major General Nguyen Tan Cuong, alternate member of the Party Central Committee - Commander of Military Region IV; Le Xuan Dai, member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; representatives of the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Soldiers' Association nationwide and other provinces, representatives of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, leaders of a number of departments, branches, units and 300 delegates from districts, cities and towns.

According to the decision of the Provincial People's Committee No. 4770, on the permission to establish the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Soldiers Association in 1972, Nghe An province, the Association has legal status, its own seal and account. The principles of organization and operation of the Association are implemented according to Article 3, Decree of the Government No. 45, 2010, and is under the management of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Nghe An province.

Regarding the purpose, the Association of Soldiers of Quang Tri Citadel in 1972, Nghe An province is a voluntary organization, gathering cadres and soldiers of the revolutionary armed forces who directly fought and participated in combat service during the 81 days and nights of protecting Quang Tri Citadel in 1972, currently living and working in Nghe An province. The Association has the task of encouraging, visiting, and supporting each other in life. At the same time, it participates in comradely activities such as gratitude, searching for and retrieving martyrs' remains, promoting revolutionary traditions, enhancing patriotism, in order to contribute to the successful implementation of the province's political tasks and the cause of defending the Vietnamese Fatherland.

In 1972, the battle to protect Quang Tri Citadel was extremely fierce and arduous. During 81 days and nights of fighting, more than 10,000 of our soldiers heroically sacrificed their lives, tens of thousands of people were injured, including many children of Nghe An. In this battle, the US and the puppet regime mobilized the maximum force of the Navy, Army, Air Force, and many types of the most modern weapons and war equipment at that time, in an attempt to break the resistance and fighting power of our army and people. They bombed and shelled Quang Tri Citadel with more than 328,000 tons of bombs and ammunition, equivalent to the destructive power of 7 atomic bombs dropped by the US on Japan in 1945.

The congress elected 35 delegates, including 11 delegates from the Executive Committee of the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Soldiers Association in 1972. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Xuan Can was elected as Chairman of the association.
