Yellow dragon fruit with white flesh has sky-high price but still in high demand
Although 20 times more expensive than red dragon fruit with white flesh, imported yellow dragon fruit is still sought after and pre-ordered by many customers.
For about half a month now, some imported fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have been competing to import white-fleshed yellow dragon fruit from Ecuador, Mexico, and Malaysia to sell at sky-high prices.
The white-fleshed yellow dragon fruit is oval-shaped, slightly elongated and smaller than the red dragon fruit. It has a thick, bright yellow skin, white, spongy flesh and is sweeter than the white-fleshed red dragon fruit in Vietnam.
Ms. Huyen, owner of an imported fruit store in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, said: "This type of dragon fruit is only available in the fall, it is sweeter than domestic dragon fruit so it is favored by many customers."
Yellow dragon fruit is considered sweeter and has softer flesh than red dragon fruit with white flesh. |
Each kilo of yellow-fleshed dragon fruit, about 3 fruits, costs 750,000 VND, while Vietnamese red-fleshed dragon fruit is only about 35,000 VND/kg.
According to Ms. Nhung, the owner of an imported fruit warehouse in Tan Binh, this is a dragon fruit variety typical of North America, the quantity harvested each season is quite small, transportation is difficult, so the price is high. However, customers still love it and have to order in advance to get the goods.
Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit, considered by health experts to be rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, helps support the digestive system, reduces cholesterol, and is good for people with cancer and diabetes.
Yellow dragon fruit has been introduced to Vietnam in recent years, mainly through small-scale trade (hand-carried goods). Recently, this dragon fruit variety has been widely grown in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, but the output is still not high.
Currently, some fruit gardens in the West have tested growing this yellow dragon fruit, but it is mainly used for holidays and Tet, and has not been grown on a large scale.
