Cooling and relieving heat with flowers
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the hot summer months are when heat exhaustion is prevalent. Below are some effective remedies to help relieve heat that you should consider.
To combat this adverse condition, Traditional Chinese Medicine employs various methods, including a unique approach of using flowers with properties that clear heat, relieve thirst, and generate fluids to make foods and drinks suitable for consumption during the summer.
- Boil 10g of sea bean flowers and 10g of honeysuckle flowers in water and drink the decoction as a substitute for tea throughout the day. Uses: Clears heat and relieves summer heat, promotes diuresis and harmonizes the stomach; used to prevent heatstroke and stimulate digestion, creating a feeling of appetite in summer.
- 8 fresh loofah flowers, 60g mung beans, a sufficient amount of white sugar. First, wash the mung beans, simmer them in a large bowl of water until they become porridge, then add the loofah flowers and cook for a few more minutes. Consume within the day. - Mix 20g of honeysuckle flowers and 10g of dried plum blossoms, divide into two portions, and steep in boiling water to drink as tea. - 30g of fresh lotus flowers and 50g of honeysuckle flowers, decocted together to make a drink to be consumed throughout the day instead of tea. - 10g of purple basil flowers, 10g of purple basil bark, 10g of calamus root, decoct all ingredients and drink the resulting liquid as a substitute for tea throughout the day. Simmer both ingredients for 20 minutes, strain the liquid, discard the solids, add white sugar, and drink throughout the day. Uses: Clears heat and detoxifies, generates fluids and quenches thirst.
- 30g honeysuckle flowers, 5g licorice root, 100g mung beans, a sufficient amount of white sugar. Boil the honeysuckle flowers and licorice root in water, strain, then add the mung beans and simmer until tender. Add sugar and divide into several portions to eat throughout the day. Uses: Clears heat and relieves thirst, prevents sunstroke and heatstroke.
