'Forest City' in China
China is about to build the world's first forest city with every building covered in plants and trees to combat air pollution.
The forest city will be home to 30,000 people once completed in the next few years, according toLong RoomThe city is located in the northern part of Liuzhou in the mountainous Guangxi Province, southern China, in an area of 175 hectares along the Liujiang River.
Offices, homes, hotels, hospitals and schools will be covered with a total of 40,000 trees and 1 million herbaceous plants of 100 species. The plants will absorb nearly 10,000 tonnes of CO2 and 57 tonnes of pollutants each year, while producing around 900 tonnes of oxygen.

The forest city will be connected to Liuzhou via high-speed rail and a tram network. The city will include various residential areas, commercial and entertainment spaces, two schools and a hospital. Homes will be equipped with geothermally powered air conditioning and solar panels on the roof.
The project was commissioned by the Liuzhou City Urban Planning Department and designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, and construction is expected to begin in 2020. The firm said the plants and trees will help reduce air temperatures, create a noise barrier, and improve biodiversity by providing shelter for birds, insects, and small animals.
