Changing scooter gearbox oil: A habit many people forget
For a motorbike, especially a scooter, changing the engine oil is very important, however, many people ignore another important part, which is the gearbox oil. How important is this type of oil and how often should the user change it?
Scooter gearbox oil, also known as differential oil, is the type of oil that lubricates the rear wheel drive gear of the scooter. Changing the differential oil regularly is as important as changing the engine oil.
In scooters, people use a belt-driven CVT transmission system instead of a chain and gearbox. In addition, the rear axle of the scooter uses a gear system to drive the wheel shaft. The role of differential oil is very important in helping the vehicle operate smoothly and ensuring safety for the driver.
To replace gearbox oil, users should rely on many factors. For tropical weather like in Vietnam, frequent flooding is also a reason why users should check gearbox oil more regularly.
When the differential oil is denatured and loses its lubricating effect, it will cause the gears to rust and the bearings to fail. This will cause the wheels to become unbalanced. Worse, it will affect the gears, causing them to no longer mesh smoothly with each other. This will greatly affect the life of other parts.
If the transmission fluid is not changed promptly, the vehicle owner may have to replace the transmission entirely.
So how can the owner check the condition of the gearbox oil on his vehicle? According to the experience of many skilled mechanics, every three times the engine oil is changed, the gearbox oil should be changed once. However, if the time has not come and the vehicle or the oil is in an unstable condition, you should change it immediately. How often to change the gearbox oil of a scooter depends on the following factors:
Oil condition
- Black:This is a sign of poor oil quality. If you continue to use it, your vehicle's parts will wear out quickly. If you see this condition, you need to change the oil immediately.
- Milky white:This shows that the vehicle's gearbox has water inside. The properties of the oil have been lost. Therefore, you need to bring the vehicle to Yamaha centers for technicians to clean, replace the oil as well as check the operation of the clutch.
- Yellow:This is normal oil condition.
Current condition of the vehicle
When the transmission oil is in bad condition, it will affect the car. Therefore, you need to pay special attention when your car has the following symptoms:
- When riding a scooter, it feels weaker than usual and there is a howling sound coming from behind.
- The car jerks and shakes. When running, the rear wheel wobbles like a flat tire.
- The car is leaking oil from the axle compartment.
Distance traveled
If your vehicle is operating normally, the oil change time will depend on the distance the vehicle has traveled. You should change the oil for the first time when the vehicle has traveled about 500km - 1000km, then, every 3000km, you should change the oil for the vehicle once to ensure the axle operates smoothly and safely.
If you drive into a flooded area, you should also check the oil condition to see if it needs to be changed.
