The most severely affected areas were the towns of Tubod and Piagapo.
Local officials said that as of today, December 24, the storm has killed more than 200 people, 144 people are still missing, while more than 40,000 people have been evacuated.
The Philippines is hit by several major storms each year, but Mindanao rarely gets hit hard. That’s why Typhoon Tembin was such a shock to the island nation of 20 million people.
The most damaging storm ever recorded in the Philippines was Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013, which killed thousands of people and completely destroyed many towns in the central Philippines.
