In a report released on September 20, despite the increase in the world's population, the number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen to below 750 million people out of a world population of about 7.5 billion.
The World Bank said this is the first time since 1990, when it began compiling statistics, that the number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen below 750 million. Extreme poverty is defined as people living on less than $1.90 a day.
Between 1990 and 2015, more than 1 billion people around the world escaped extreme poverty. The World Bank estimates that the number of people escaping extreme poverty has increased over the past three years.
In 2015, the poverty rate fell to 10% of the world's population. And according to the preliminary report, this number will continue to fall to 8.6% in 2018.
However, the report said that despite progress, the total number of people living in poverty remains unacceptable.
This is especially the case in Africa. The number of people living in extreme poverty has increased from 278 million to 400 million. This is largely due to the continent's explosive population growth.
