School sports: Still underestimated

(Baonghean) - Physical education and sports movements in schools contribute significantly to the comprehensive development of students. However, due to the lack of facilities as well as shortcomings in physical education, school sports have not been promoted to their full potential...

In recent times, although physical education for students in the province has not had a breakthrough development, the internal curriculum has always been implemented by 100% of schools in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. The innovation of physical education programs and methods, and the development of school sports not only brings a new look to the comprehensive education of Nghe An but also creates conditions for the province's sports sector to have a large and quality reserve source.

Looking at the statistics of the National Phu Dong Sports Festival (HKPĐ) - the largest playground for school-age sports, it can be seen that Nghe An school sports have made great progress. Specifically, at the 7th National HKPĐ in 2008, Nghe An student sports delegation won 23 medals (5 Gold, 43 Silver and 14 Bronze), ranked 35/63 delegations. At the 8th National HKPĐ in 2012, Nghe An student sports delegation rose to win 79 medals (17 Gold, 27 Silver, 35 Bronze), ranked 19/63 delegations.

At the 9th National Phu Dong Sports Festival in 2016, Nghe An sports delegation continued to rise, ranking 13th out of 63 provinces and cities. In addition, many Nghe An sports talents have their starting point from school sports, were discovered through Phu Dong Sports Festivals, were professionally trained and brought back many glories such as Nguyen Thi Quyen, Nguyen Thi Mo (soccer), Nguyen Thi Thanh (soccer), Le Quang Hai (athletics)...

School sports is the foundation for selecting talented athletes to train them into professional athletes. But in reality, in Nghe An, school sports still face many difficulties, especially the lack of sports grounds for students. According to a report from the Department of Education and Training: “In recent years, schools have made many efforts to build and renovate playgrounds and practice grounds for students. 100% of schools have playgrounds to conduct physical education classes according to the program; some schools have mini soccer fields. The number of fields that organize school-wide sports activities is about 80%”.

However, in reality, many schools still lack standard playgrounds for physical education. For example, in Vinh City, out of 11 high schools in the city (both public and private), only 5 schools have multi-functional buildings for physical education. In other high schools, physical education takes place outdoors, on sports fields or school yards; whenever the weather is unfavorable (such as severe cold, rain, wind, etc.), learning must be postponed... According to statistics, by the end of the 2015-2016 school year, in the whole province, only 49/539 primary schools, 42/412 secondary schools, and 25/91 high schools have multi-functional buildings for physical education classes.

Besides, the physical education teaching staff also has many shortcomings. Currently, in the education program from primary to secondary school, students are taught physical education with many subjects such as short running, endurance running, high jump, long jump, shuttlecock kicking, volleyball, soccer, badminton..., in which some subjects require a lot of dexterity such as soccer, volleyball, badminton... need teachers with deep expertise to meet the requirements and create excitement for students and the effectiveness of the subject.

However, currently, schools do not have specialized teachers for these subjects, and one teacher has to teach many subjects, which is ineffective. Therefore, the PE classes during the week only help students relax and relieve the pressure of studying, but cannot be considered as proper sports training and health training.

In fact, at present, in many schools, due to the heavy cultural curriculum, physical education is neglected; physical education is always considered a secondary subject, so teaching, learning and testing are perfunctory, making training and improving students' physical fitness become a formality.

Mr. Le Van Son - Physical Education teacher at Le Viet Thuat High School, said: "In the main curriculum, Physical Education is no longer graded but only evaluated as "pass" or "fail", making most students feel that Physical Education is unnecessary. Physical Education class hours are converted into review hours for the main subjects and graduation exams, even though at the end of the year, the Department of Education and Training issued a document instructing schools not to cut down on the hours of secondary subjects, including Physical Education."

To overcome the difficulties in developing school sports, it is necessary to have the cooperation of many parties, from the Education sector, the Sports sector to parents and the students themselves. The key issue is how to distribute time and the amount of cultural knowledge reasonably so that students have the conditions to pursue their passion for sports.

Authorities also need to pay more attention to solutions on mechanisms and policies, increase the mobilization of social resources to improve facilities, promote education and communication about the benefits of school sports...
