23 more customs officers prosecuted

All 23 defendants were former leaders, managers, and specialists of the Ha Tien International Border Gate Customs Branch and the Giang Thanh National Border Gate Customs Branch (Kien Giang province).

On the afternoon of June 8, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tuong - Deputy Director of the People's Procuracy of Kien Giang province said that this agency has just approved the decision to prosecute 23 former leaders, managers, and specialists of the Customs Branch of Ha Tien international border gate and Giang Thanh national border gate to investigate irresponsible behavior causing serious consequences. Currently, all are on bail.

According to Mr. Tuong, 23 customs officers have just been prosecuted in connection with the case of appropriating more than 110 billion VND in tax refund money carried out by Tran Huu Tho (residing in Vinh Dieu commune, Giang Thanh district), his son-in-law Vo Thanh Tuyen and several other subjects from 2010 to July 2013.

These subjects were tried in 2015, in which the highest sentence was life imprisonment for Tran Huu Tho.

Regarding this case, previously, the People's Court of Kien Giang province tried and sentenced 10 defendants, who were also former customs officers of the two customs branches of Ha Tien International Border Gate and Giang Thanh National Border Gate, to 2-4 years in prison for the crime of "lack of responsibility causing serious consequences" under Clause 2, Article 285 of the Penal Code.
