Another reason to drink coffee every day.
It's worth knowing - Drinking a cup of coffee every day may help reduce the symptoms of aging around the eyes, according to new research published by American scientists.
According to the British newspaper The Mail, on May 8th, researchers at Cornell University (New York, USA) discovered a chemical in coffee that can prevent vision loss and blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration or diseases such as glaucoma and diabetes. Coffee contains 1% caffeine but 7-9% chlorogenic acid, a powerful antioxidant. Scientists conducted experiments on mice showing that this acid can prevent macular degeneration.
According to Professor Chang Y. Lee (a food science researcher and author of the study), the retina is a thin layer of tissue in the eye with millions of light-sensitive cells and nerve cells that help receive and organize visual information. It is also one of the most metabolically active cells and requires a high amount of oxygen; therefore, oxygen deficiency and the production of free radicals can lead to tissue damage and vision loss. Professor Lee added that this study shows another benefit of this popular beverage for human health. Previous studies have shown that coffee also helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, prostate cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and other age-related diseases.
