Yvette Cooper, an opposition Labour MP, has called the police after someone tweeted threats to kill her children and grandchildren. A Twitter account accused her of emailing propaganda material to the EU and threatened: “Stop it now or I will kill your children and grandchildren.”
Reposting the threat on Twitter, Yvette Cooper commented: “I received this threat today for speaking out in support of Britain remaining in the EU. This has to stop.”
Yvette Cooper, the MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, is a Remain supporter. The threat against Yvette Cooper comes a week after Jo Cox, an MP who also supported the Remain campaign, was shot and stabbed to death.
After Ms. Cooper reported the threat to the police, the account that sent the message was deleted. “The police and Twitter are working together to investigate the incident. But the hate must stop,” Ms. Cooper said.
Following the death of MP Jo Cox, many MPs have also spoken out saying they have been attacked or received threatening messages. However, politicians say the murder of MP Jo Cox will not stop them from meeting voters in their constituencies.
A recent survey of 239 lawmakers found that 43 had been the subject of attacks or attempted attacks, while 101 had received threatening text messages.
