Another death from treating rabies with herbal medicine
(Baonghean.vn) - Hearing many people say that vaccination reduces memory, Mr. Chau took his son to a witch doctor to have him examined by using a coin to scratch the bite to determine whether it was a rabid dog bite or not.
» Hot: Rabies outbreak appears, 40 people bitten by dogs, 1 person died
At 9:00 a.m. on September 26, 2016, Tan Ky District General Hospital received patient Nguyen Van Tuan (7 years old), son of Nguyen Van Chau in Don Ken hamlet, Tay Thanh commune (Yen Thanh).
Tuan was admitted to the hospital with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and itching all over his body. The hospital diagnosed him with acute abdominal pain.
At 2:00 p.m. on September 26, 2016, Tuan began to show unusual symptoms such as fever, poor appetite, fear of water, fear of wind, fear of ceiling fan blades...
The boy's father said that a month ago, Tuan was bitten by a dog. The dog died 4 days after biting him. The family took him for vaccinations, but only for tetanus, not rabies.

Mr. Chau said that because he heard many acquaintances say that vaccination would reduce memory, he took his child to a traditional healer, who examined him by scratching the bite with a coin to determine if it was a rabid dog bite or not, then boiled herbal medicine leaves to drink.
Tuan was then transferred to Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for treatment. There, doctors diagnosed Tuan with rabies. However, at this time the patient had a typical rabies attack and could not be treated.
After a day of struggling with rabies, Tuan was sent home from the hospital. On the morning of September 28, 2016, he died.
Mr. Hoang Van Sam - Deputy Director of Tan Ky General Hospital: "Scratching a coin on the bite to "diagnose" whether the patient is infected with the rabies virus or not is a completely unscientific method. In fact, using traditional medicine to treat rabies has caused many people to die due to their trust in folk healers. The best way to prevent rabies when bitten by a dog or cat is to get vaccinated within the first few hours. In particular, when detecting an animal showing signs of rabies or a wound near the head, face, neck or in areas with many nerves such as the extremities or genitals, it is necessary to inject anti-rabies serum. If not treated promptly, when rabies occurs, almost 100% of cases will die. After being scratched or bitten by a dog or cat, the patient should wash the wound with concentrated soap or salt water, then disinfect the wound with alcohol and go to the nearest medical facility to get a rabies vaccine. Currently, there is no scientific basis to confirm that rabies vaccination will cause memory loss in patients." |
