On the morning of October 20, in Hanoi, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union organized a conference to deploy the International Cooperation Program between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Farmers' Organization in the Asia-Pacific region, phase 2 (from 2013-2018). Nearly 200 delegates representing Farmers' Organizations in 13 countries in the Asia-Pacific region attended.

The cooperation program between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Farmers' Unions in the Asia-Pacific region, phase 2 (MPCP2), has been implemented in Vietnam and other countries in the region since 2013. The program's goal is to contribute to poverty reduction, strengthen the capacity of Farmers' Unions and the ability to provide services to farmers and poor households in rural areas in Asia-Pacific.

According to a survey by the International Fund for Agricultural Development, more than 80% of food in Asia - Pacific is produced by farmers. However, they are the poorest and most disadvantaged groups compared to others. The representative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development said that although Vietnam has over 70% of its population engaged in agricultural production, in recent years, agricultural production has been quite backward compared to other countries in the region, with small and fragmented production scale, lack of scientific and technical knowledge, resulting in low economic efficiency.

The conference is also an opportunity for delegates from the Vietnam Farmers’ Union and Farmers’ Unions in the region to share and exchange experiences, propose solutions and recommendations to improve farmers’ lives. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) pledged to support 3 million USD for Farmers’ Unions in the Asia-Pacific region in the second phase from 2014-2018 to continue implementing the MPCP2 program.

The conference will be held until October 22, 2014.
