Additional funding to support Vietnamese farmers.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has committed to providing $3 million in support to farmers' associations in the Asia-Pacific region during phase 2, from 2014-2018.

On the morning of October 20th, in Hanoi, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association held a conference to launch the second phase (2013-2018) of the International Cooperation Program between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Farmers' Organization of the Asia-Pacific region. Nearly 200 delegates representing Farmers' Associations from 13 countries in the Asia-Pacific region attended.

The second phase of the Partnership for Agriculture Development between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Farmers' Association of Asia and the Pacific (MPCP2) has been implemented in Vietnam and other countries in the region since 2013. The program aims to contribute to poverty reduction, strengthen the capacity of Farmers' Associations, and enhance their ability to provide services to farmers and poor households in rural areas of the Asia and Pacific region.

According to a survey by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), over 80% of food in the Asia-Pacific region is produced by farmers. However, they are among the poorest and most disadvantaged compared to other groups. A representative from the IFAD stated that although over 70% of Vietnam's population is engaged in agriculture, agricultural production has remained relatively backward compared to other countries in the region. Production is small-scale, fragmented, and lacks scientific and technical knowledge, resulting in low economic efficiency.

The conference also provided an opportunity for delegates from the Vietnam Farmers' Association and Farmers' Associations of other countries in the region to share experiences, exchange ideas, and propose solutions and recommendations to improve the lives of farmers. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) committed to providing US$3 million to Farmers' Associations in the Asia-Pacific region for phase 2 (2014-2018) to continue implementing the MPCP2 program.

The conference will run until October 22, 2014.
