Discover the challenging journey of VTV film crew going upstream of Mekong River to Cambodia, recording the story of the fish symbolizing the flood season and culture of the West.

From Tonle Sap to the Mekong Delta

Originating from the vast waters of Tonle Sap Lake, linh fish follow the alluvial flow down to the Mekong Delta every time the water level in the seventh lunar month overflows the banks. This journey not only brings abundant aquatic resources but also shapes a unique river culture, realistically portrayed in the documentary "Following the Linh Fish" of VTV Can Tho.

The lives of many generations of people are closely linked to linh fish, from the typical fishing methods such as pushing and shoving, unloading nets, to the unique fish sauce brewing industry. Floating fish markets on the river, rustic dishes such as linh fish sauce hotpot or linh fish stewed with water mimosa flowers have become an inseparable part of the identity of the West.

Recording the life from arduous journeys

To make the documentary, the VTV Can Tho crew determined that this would be a cultural journey that required careful preparation. The work trip to Cambodia faced many challenges, from the harsh climate, unfamiliar terrain to language barriers.

Editor Khoi Nguyen shared: "This is the first time we've worked here and the topic is quite special, but we believe we can overcome those challenges to bring interesting and impressive things to the audience."

The crew had to face scorching heat and sudden rains that could damage equipment. The filming time fell during the period when Cambodia had just ended its "no fishing" season, making it difficult to find fishermen working. Thanks to the support of VTV's Resident Office in Cambodia and the Khmer Association of Vietnam in Kampong Chhnang province, authentic footage of fishing village life was recorded.

The story of climate change and adaptation efforts

Beyond the culinary story, "Following the Linh Fish" also conveys a profound message about climate change, drought and salinity and their impacts on water security and the livelihoods of people in the Mekong Delta. The natural production of Linh fish has decreased significantly in recent years.

However, the people of the West still make efforts to not lose this symbolic fish. Although the output has decreased, linh fish has never missed the flood season. Currently, people have found a way to raise linh fish commercially, similar to the successful cultivation of sesban flowers all year round, showing the ability to flexibly adapt to changes in nature.

The 7-episode documentary not only recalls memories of river life but also reflects the new journey of the "spirit fish" in a modern context. This is a testament to the tenacious spirit of television workers and their love for their homeland in the Southwest.
