While zombies exist only in the imagination, the West is warning about "smombies", people addicted to mobile phones who can endanger themselves and those around them.
Tired of constantly warning locals and tourists, a town in the city of Augsburg, Germany installed traffic warning lights on the road surface, so that people looking down at their phones can see them, according to Odditycentral.
This solution was proposed after an accident between a train and two pedestrians who were not looking but only looking at their phone screens. The two people only suffered minor injuries. However, a 15-year-old girl in Munich was not so lucky. She was dragged by a train before she died, also because she was engrossed in her phone.
New traffic light system inAugsburg will flash red warning lights when a tram is approaching, or when regular traffic lights turn red. Some residentsAugsburg was pleased with the initiative after regularly witnessing young people crossing the street without knowing the red light.
Smartphone addicts, however, seem oblivious to this. One smartphone-addicted teenager said he had no idea the new lighting system was working, except at night. He answered the interview while still glued to his phone screen.
"Smombies" is a combination ofsmartphone and zombie, voted as new words in Germany since 2015.
