Alejandro Murat, governor of the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, confirmed yesterday that Alejandro Aparicio Santiago, the new mayor of the city of Tlaxiaco, died shortly after taking office,APMurat pledged to get to the bottom of the incident and said a suspect was in custody.

According to the Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office, after Aparicio had just been sworn in and was on his way to a meeting at city hall, several gunmen attacked him. Aparicio was taken to the hospital but died shortly thereafter. Four other people were injured in the assassination.

Assassinations of politicians are common in Mexico. According to data compiled by the consulting firm Etellekt since September 2017, a total of 133 politicians have been murdered in the run-up to Mexico’s July 2018 elections. The victims were mostly local politicians, who are frequent targets of Mexico’s major drug cartels.
