Full sun exposure is good for your health. |
A recent study by Swedish scientists shows that just as overexposure to sunlight is harmful to health, avoiding direct sunlight is equally unwise.
Dr. Pelle Lindqvist of Karolinska University Hospital (Sweden) and colleagues found that women who are not afraid of the sun are less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and lung disease than those who avoid sun exposure.
The researchers admit that the conclusion that sun exposure promotes health and longevity seems to contradict the notion that sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer.
However, the researchers still assert: Although we found an increased risk of skin cancer with excessive sun exposure, we still found that among skin cancer cases (for many reasons), skin cancer patients with a history of sun exposure still had a better prognosis. This study was conducted on 30,000 Swedish women over 20 years (since 1990).
The study also found that compared to people who like to sunbathe, the life expectancy of people who avoid the sun is reduced from 6 months to 2.1 years, regardless of their smoking habits and lack of exercise... The results of this study were just published in the Journal of Internal Medicine published on March 21, 2016.
