Mr. Truong Son, who has been working as a fan repairman for over 30 years, is repairing a fan. |
Mr. Truong Son, who has been in the business for more than 30 years, said that usually at the beginning of the hot season, many customers bring their fans in for repair, and the number of customers gradually spreads out until the end of the season. On peak days, Mr. Son's shop repairs more than a dozen fans.
Most of their “diseases” are due to damaged shafts, misaligned bearings or dry oil. According to Mr. Son, depending on the type of disease, the workers can fix it quickly or slowly. Having worked in the profession for many years, there are times when he only needs to look at the problem and it takes about an hour to fix a fan. But there are also times when it takes him more than a day to fix it.

A customer brought the fan in for repair. |
Mr. Van Binh, the owner of a household electrical shop on Le Huan Street, shared that he has been involved in this profession for more than 20 years. After attending a formal training school and then studying on his own, Mr. Binh has a fairly spacious and crowded shop. Mr. Binh said that fans brought in for repair can be divided into two types: mechanical fans and electronic fans.
Repairing electric fans is often more complicated. Customers do not bring in modern fans for repair, but also old fans from the 80s. The price of the shop is usually only about 200,000 VND or less, depending on the type of problem with the fan. Even for minor problems, he does not charge customers. His shop not only specializes in repairing fans and machines, but also motorbikes, electric bicycles, etc.

Through the hands of "wind workers" they can return to normal operation. |
As for Mr. Dang Xuan Nam, the owner of a small household electrical repair shop on Nguyen Truong To Street, he came to this profession by chance. Because he was skillful and knew a little about electricity, people around him often asked him to help them fix things. Then, around 2004, he decided to study electrical engineering for 6 months and then work for hire to gain more experience before opening his own shop. On average, Mr. Nam earns from 3 to 4 million VND per month.
During these extremely hot days, the "wind workers" in Vinh city are working at full capacity. The number of customers has increased dramatically, the workers cannot keep up with the work, many have to hire additional workers to meet the needs of customers.
Many "wind workers" confided that the work was hard and the income was not worth much, so many people quit the job. In particular, very few young people pursue this profession; some apprentices decided to quit after a short time for many reasons such as not being patient enough, being forced to sit in one place, unstable salary...
