Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Yildirim said the coup plotters had drawn up detailed plans on who would take up ministerial positions and who would head martial law. He added that investigations were ongoing and arrests of suspected security forces were continuing.
Meanwhile, Turks continued to march in public areas to show support for President Tayyip Erdogan. The US Consulate General in Istanbul on July 18 predicted protests near its facilities and warned US citizens to avoid the area.
Meanwhile, the Russian government also expressed concern about instability along the border area following the failed coup attempt in Türkiye, the attack on a police headquarters and hostage taking by armed extremists in Armenia, and the attack on security forces by a gunman in Kazakhstan.
Currently, Turkish security forces are still conducting many new raids to search for suspects involved in the recent coup.
According to Turkish media, about 104 generals and admirals were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the failed coup on the night of July 15. A senior Turkish security official also said that 8,000 police officers across the country, including many in Istanbul and the capital Ankara, were fired for allegedly being involved.
