Yesterday, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for President Putin, said that in a message to the Russian leader, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan apologized for the downing of the plane, expressed condolences for the death of the pilot, and said that Turkey did not want to damage relations with Russia, which it considered its strategic partner.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities said one of the steps to normalize bilateral relations is for Ankara to not only apologize for its actions, but also compensate for damages.

"The content of the letter is clear. We clearly expressed our regrets, and if necessary, compensation (for the downed plane). Both countries want to normalize relations. I think things are getting better…", Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on TRT television channel.
