Sweet and fragrant orange season in Yen Thanh

It was early morning, but the orange garden of Mr. Vo Van Bang's family in Dong Trung hamlet, Dong Thanh commune was bustling with traders coming to buy. With more than 2,300 orange trees on an area of ​​6 hectares, this year the family's orange output increased compared to last year, estimated at over 20 tons of fruit. Currently, the selling price at the garden is from 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, Mr. Bang expects to earn a profit of nearly 1 billion VND after deducting all expenses.

“My family has been growing oranges for 6 years now. Although there was a storm at the beginning of the season, the orange garden was not affected much. Overall, this year the oranges have a good harvest, with big, beautiful fruits. At this time, I have sold about 1 ton of fruit,” said Mr. Bang.

Orange trees have taken root in Dong Thanh for nearly 10 years. At first, only 5 households planted them on 20 hectares. Up to now, the whole commune has 42 households planting oranges on an area of ​​75 hectares; of which 35 hectares have been harvested.

In 2017, although the fruiting time of the orange trees was affected by storms and rains, thanks to good care techniques, Dong Thanh oranges still had a good harvest; on average, each sao yielded 6-8 quintals of fruit, with some gardeners achieving about 10 quintals of fruit/sao, earning a profit of 20-25 million VND/sao. It is expected that in the 2017 orange crop, the whole commune will harvest about 640 tons, with a total value of 20-22 billion VND.

According to Mr. Luong Van Hoan - Chairman of Dong Thanh Commune Farmers' Association, Dong Thanh oranges have bright, beautiful colors, a cool, sweet flavor, and a very unique flavor. Compared to previous years, this year's oranges have a high yield; many localities now know the Dong Thanh orange brand.

Every year, from the end of October to the beginning of November, orange growers start harvesting. In the orange gardens, the harvest atmosphere is bustling, many traders inside and outside the province come to the gardens to order and buy oranges. Orange trees have contributed to bringing a prosperous life to many people here.
