The Chôm Lôm suspension bridge was built following a catastrophic boat sinking that shocked the entire country in 2006. However,Following Typhoon No. 4 in 2018, water from upstream caused hydroelectric power plants along the Lam River to simultaneously release large volumes of water, resulting in the collapse of the Chôm Lôm bridge abutment (Con Cuông) on the right bank, south of the river. A 7-meter-long crack caused traffic and transportation to be disrupted.
