Russia hopes that "anti-Russian hysteria" will not take center stage in the new US presidential campaign, Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"In fact, the US election is an internal matter of the US. But here we are only relying on the experience of previous US election cycles and knowing that, usually these elections are accompanied by an increase in anti-Russian sentiment, which can be called anti-Russian hysteria," he affirmed to the press.

"Every time we want to hope that this will not happen. We hope that this time all this anti-Russian hysteria will not be at the heart of the election campaign," Peskov added, commenting on the issue of the situation regarding the extension of the Treaty on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms between the Soviet Union and the United States (START) not being resolved before the US elections.

The treaty itself expires in 2021 and the prospects for the US administration to extend it are unclear.
