Reuters news agency quoted a witness as saying that the leader of the exiled opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), Sam Rainsy, was arrested by Malaysian immigration authorities after he landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on November 9.
Mr. Sam Rainsy has pledged to return to his homeland to lead the protest movement against the government.
Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has led Cambodia for more than three decades, has described the planned return of Mr Rainsy and other opposition leaders as a coup attempt.
Previously, there was information that Mr. Sam Rainsy returned to the country on November 9 (via Thailand) to call on the people to "restore democracy," a plan that Prime Minister Hun Sen's government considered an attempt to overthrow the legitimate Cambodian government.
The Royal Cambodian Army has declared a state of high alert along the border with Thailand to guard against the risk of mass gatherings aimed at disrupting Cambodia's National Day.
However, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha affirmed that the Thai Government does not allow Mr. Sam Rainsy and his colleagues to use Thai territory to oppose the legitimate Government of Thailand.Cambodia.
On November 7, Mr. Sam Rainsy admitted to indefinitely postponing his return trip to Cambodia because Thai airlines did not allow him to board the plane, citing his illegal actions./.
