Testing off-season squash planting in Hoang Mai town
(Baonghean.vn) - Previously, farmers in Hoang Mai town rarely grew squash because the efficiency was not high compared to other vegetables and it was relatively difficult to sell. This summer-autumn crop, some households have boldly experimented with growing off-season squash with high productivity, averaging 20 million/sao.
Previously, people often planted a type of squash with long, curved fruit, thin flesh, spongy inside and sour taste. This type of squash has high yield, but poor storage capacity, difficult to sell, at times only sold for 2,000 VND/kg so many households destroyed it. In the winter crop of 2015, the Agricultural Extension Board of Quynh Lien commune, Hoang Mai town encouraged people to test-plant 3 sao of the new hairy squash variety provided by the Golden Swallow Company.

This is a long, straight squash, high yield, quite resistant to pests and diseases, short growing time, only 1.5 months to harvest. On average, each tree has 3-5 fruits, each fruit weighs 2-5 kg on average.
From the success of 3 sao of experimental green squash planting, people have now expanded the off-season green squash growing area to 15 sao.

The squash has small fruit, dense flesh, and a sweet, crunchy taste, so it is popular. |
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuyet - an officer in charge of agriculture in Quynh Lien commune said: Hairy squash has many advantages over traditional squash varieties. However, this is a new variety so it has not been widely grown by people. In the future, if this squash variety is really effective, the commune will encourage people to expand the area.
To get the highest yield from the pumpkin garden, it is necessary to plow the soil thoroughly, remove all weeds and sprinkle lime powder to prevent pests. Then proceed to make beds about 1.5 m wide, 25 cm high and have drainage ditches. After incubation, the seeds with 2 cotyledons are sown in the field. When the pumpkin begins to appear, make a high trellis. The pumpkin can be harvested for a long time, about 5 months, with a yield of 3 tons/sao, reaching over 20 million/sao. Although the off-season green pumpkin is more difficult to grow than the winter crop, it is easier to sell, and traders come to buy it in the field. On the other hand, this hairy pumpkin variety has a dense flesh, is crispy and sweet, so it is used for stir-frying or cooking soup, and is popular with customers. Green pumpkin has become a valuable commodity, helping people increase their income per unit area. |
