Earning billions from green squash in Thanh Chuong

The joy of a good harvest is evident on the farmers' faces.

Pumpkin is a familiar crop to households in Linh Hong village, Thanh Linh commune (Thanh Chuong). Many years ago, people planted pumpkin on 5% of the land, but it has become a commercial crop in recent years, when the land was consolidated to create conditions for intensive investment.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh in Thanh Linh commune shared: "My family grows 2 sao of green squash, this is an easy-to-grow plant, quick to harvest; each year we can grow 4 crops, if we count all 4 crops, the average income is more than 30 million VND/sao/year.

According to Ms. Tran Thi Thuy - Head of the Farmers' Association of Linh Hong village, currently 100% of households in the village grow squash with a total area of ​​about 4 hectares. The Farmers' Association has linked up with businesses in Do Luong, Nam Dan and Vinh city so the products are purchased at the field. Although the price is unstable, the lowest is 4,000 VND/kg, never unsold, squash is currently the most economically efficient crop on this land.

Due to the effectiveness of the green squash plant, many villages in Thanh Linh commune are now participating in growing squash. Mr. Nguyen Trung Sy - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thanh Linh commune affirmed: The locality has built many production models, but green squash is still the number one crop chosen by the people. From Thanh Linh commune, the green squash plant has spread throughout the district, most in Thanh Lien, Thanh Giang, and Cat Van communes, which are communes with large areas of fertile land and alluvial soil. Thanh Lien commune has 3 households in Lien Chau hamlet bidding for 5 hectares of alluvial soil to specialize in growing green squash.

In addition to high productivity, green squash products also recorded good consumption, the current selling price is from 4,500 - 5,000 VND/kg, sometimes increasing to 7,000 VND/kg. According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Nam - Owner of a squash purchasing business in Do Luong district: "Although the price is unstable, fluctuating according to the market, squash is easy to sell. When we cooperate with farmers to get a high price, we are happy together, when the price goes down, we share, so everyone is excited".

With more than 100 hectares of pumpkins spread throughout the district, this spring, Thanh Chuong people harvested about 400 tons, earning billions of dong. This is the result of cooperation to help people feel secure in investing, and is the basis for the district to continue to propose policies to change the crop structure to increase productivity and economic value per unit area.
