Deputy Minister of Education and Training advises students not to practice for exams outside.
Deputy Minister Bui Van Ga: Students need to focus on reviewing at home, should not go to practice exams outside because it is both time-consuming and affects their health.
There is only one week left until the 2017 National High School Exam. Students are taking advantage of the time to review knowledge and practice multiple choice questions.
Up to this point, some high schools in Hanoi have stopped organizing in-class review sessions for 12th graders. Accordingly, students are studying at home, mainly collecting test questions online and actively practicing multiple choice test-taking skills.
Nguyen Quang Thien, a 12th grader at Dong Quan High School in Phu Xuyen District, Hanoi, said: “I study in class and do the test questions, and at home I look for more materials to study. I search for materials online and books to read. I study from 8pm to 11pm, sometimes even later. My practice test results are okay, but I am still weak in Math.”
Due to the changes in the structure of the exam and the way it is organized this year, especially the change in Math from essay to multiple choice, the combination of natural sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) and social sciences (Civic Education, Geography, History) has made many students worried and forced them to go to extra classes to "run" for exam preparation.
Dang Thi Thanh Mai, a 12th grade student at Le Loi High School, Ha Dong, said: “In the morning, I go to school. In the afternoon, I go to Math and then I have to take History, Geography, and Civics classes. Because this year, these subjects have been changed to multiple choice, so I have to take extra classes to understand and do them. Before, I planned to review block A, but then I had to switch to block D. This is a common situation, not just me rushing around. In the evening, I get home at 10:00 - 10:30 and then I start studying at 12:00, but I am tired so I study a little or don't study at all.”

Previously, from mid-May, high schools organized focused review sessions for subjects according to the registered students and took mock tests according to the sample test structure announced by the Ministry of Education and Training. From the results of these tests, teachers supplemented instructions for students to review weak knowledge. During this urgent time, teachers trained students to have multiple choice test taking skills.
Teacher Dao Thi Thu Huong, Trung Van High School, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi said: “The mistakes that students often make are being hasty and hasty. Multiple choice questions have 4 answers, so answer 1 and answer 2 are similar to the correct answer, but students do not read all 4 answers and circle them. That is what needs to be retrained in multiple choice test taking skills for students. First, you have to read the full answer and then circle it, don't be hasty. After finishing, you have to check it again.”
In the 2017 National High School Exam, candidates had to take a combined exam of three subjects at once, while previously they only had to take one subject per session. Therefore, students were under great pressure to learn. According to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga, students should focus on studying at home and not go to practice exams outside, which is both time-consuming and harmful to their health.
“The innovation in the exam makes it easier for students to take the exam. Therefore, students do not need to worry. First of all, the exam content is still within the 12th grade program, so students do not need to study far away. Second, with multiple choice tests, students will cover all the knowledge of the program. Students are not afraid of luck, so if they fully review the programs, they can do well on the exam. As for university and college admissions, students have more wishes,” added Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga.
The 2017 National High School Exam will officially take place from June 22 to June 24. On June 22, in the morning, candidates will take the Literature exam, and in the afternoon, they will take the Math exam. On June 23, in the morning, candidates will take the Natural Science exam including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and in the afternoon, they will take the Foreign Language exam. On June 24, in the morning, candidates will take the Social Science exam including History, Geography, and Civic Education./.
