According to CNN, Mr. Abe and his cabinet have repeatedly asked Mr. Trump to raise the issue of North Korea's repeated abductions of Japanese citizens at his summit with Mr. Kim Jong-un.
Over the decades, Pyongyang has abducted Japanese and South Korean citizens, some of whom have never been seen again.
In total, 17 Japanese citizens are officially registered as being abducted by North Korea, although there are reports that many others have also become hostages.
It’s a relatively small number, but Japan takes the issue very seriously. Prime Minister Abe has described it as a top priority. Both Trump and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have promised to raise the issue with Kim Jong-un.
