Accordingly, the British Prime Minister has appointed First Secretary of State for the Treasury David Gauke as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. In addition, Speaker of the House of Commons David Lidington has been chosen as Secretary of State for Justice. Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Justice Elizabeth Truss will become First Secretary of State for the Treasury, replacing Mr. David Gauke. Former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Damian Green - a long-time friend of Mrs. May - has also been transferred to a new position.
It is known that Prime Minister May still retains the positions of other top ministers in the government.
The cabinet “reshuffle” took place a few days after Mrs. May’s defeat in the British election on June 8. Specifically, Prime Minister May’s Conservative Party was unable to achieve the majority target of 326 seats needed to form a government on its own.
According to the final results, the Conservative Party won 318 seats, losing 12 seats compared to the previous election while the Labor Party won 262 seats, increasing 30 seats compared to the previous election.
