Mrs May affirmed that this was a “sick and evil” attack aimed at the heart of the capital London.

Prime Minister May stressed that any attempt to undermine the values of the UK through violence and terrorism will fail. She shared her condolences with the families and friends of the victims of the attack, and praised the quick response of the police force after the incident. However, Prime Minister May said that the terror threat level in this country will not be raised.

According to updated figures from the British police, as of early morning on March 23, five people had been killed and 40 injured in the attack. This is considered the biggest terrorist attack in London since the suicide bombing that killed 52 people in July 2005 and is also the latest terrorist attack in Europe, taking place exactly one year after the suicide bombings at the airport and subway in Brussels (Belgium).

The attack in London on March 22 is said to be similar in nature to the terrorist truck attack in the southern French city of Nice last year that killed 84 people.

Speaking after the incident, Mark Rowley, Assistant Commissioner for Counter Terrorism at the Metropolitan Police Force, said: “This is a day we prepare for, but hope will never happen. Sadly it has come to pass.”

According to witnesses, a car carrying the suspects had earlier crashed into people at the other end of Westminster Bridge, then continued to this end of the bridge and crashed into the fence of the Parliament building and people, before one of the two suspects rushed into the Parliament building yard, stabbed a police officer and was then shot dead by the police. The incident occurred at around 14:40 on March 22.

The British government recently revealed information that security agencies have foiled 13 attack plots targeting the country in less than four years./.
