Armenian Prime Minister Reveals Conversation with President Putin About Conflict in Karabakh

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan revealed to RBC what Russian President Vladimir Putin told him on the phone.

According to him, the main topic of the phone call was the situation in the South Caucasus and the actions of terrorists in this region. Mr. Pashinyan also said that the involvement of rebels in the conflictconflict in Karabakhis a problem for global security.

In addition, Mr. Putin and the Armenian Prime Minister discussed a number of issues related to the cooperation of both countries within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Mr. Pashinyan called Russia a strategic ally of Armenia and noted that there are specific agreements between the two countries in the field of security.

The Prime Minister of Armenia has called the President of the Russian Federation several times to discuss the escalation of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Kremlin press service said that President Vladimir Putin has also called for a ceasefire on more than one occasion.

Earlier on Wednesday, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, in a letter to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin congratulating him on his birthday, expressed hope that Russia's efforts would help resolve the conflict in Karabakh.

That afternoon, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh by phone with the Defense Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, David Tonoyan and Zakir Hasanov.

On October 4, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that a condition for a ceasefire in Karabakh was for Yerevan to withdraw its troops from the region and provide Baku with a plan for its withdrawal. Two days later, Pashinyan said that Yerevan was ready to make concessions to Baku on the Karabakh issue, if the concessions were reciprocal from both sides.

Serious military clashes in Karabakh resumed on September 27. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of shelling and causing civilian casualties.
