Speaking to MPs in the House of Commons, Mr Cameron said that maintaining a close relationship with the EU would benefit Britain in terms of trade, cooperation and security.

Outgoing Prime Minister Cameron stressed that the new British Prime Minister's top priority is to ensure that British businesses continue to have appropriate access to the EU single market.

Mr Cameron's statement was made during his final question period in the House of Commons as Prime Minister. He will then go to the Palace to tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II. New Prime Minister Theresa May will take office tonight, July 13, local time.

Mr. Cameron became British Prime Minister in May 2010 and was re-elected after the Conservative Party's victory in the general election in May 2015. He decided to resign after failing to convince British voters to vote to stay in the EU in the referendum on June 23./.
