With a packed schedule, in just a short time in Naypyidaw, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended the 2013 World Economic Forum on East Asia, met with Myanmar President Thein Sein, and held meetings with leaders of several major global economic corporations.
Vietnam actively and proactively participates in WEF activities.
With the theme "Transformation Towards Comprehensive Integration and Development," the WEF East Asia 2013 conference attracted over 900 delegates, including politicians, leaders of leading corporations, and civil society organizations from within and outside the region.
Speaking at the opening session, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized that the East Asian region is developing dynamically, home to some of the world's largest economies and many emerging economies, with the dominant trend being multi-layered, multi-sectoral cooperation and integration for mutual development and benefit. This presents a great opportunity but also demands that countries strive for innovation, self-improvement, and adaptation to an increasingly fierce environment of integration and competition.
According to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, in the era of globalization, along with national-level efforts, the necessary conditions for developing countries, including Vietnam, to achieve growth, poverty reduction, and become modern industrialized nations are: a peaceful, stable, and cooperative international environment based on respect for international law; free flow of trade and investment through economic integration; and effective cooperation among nations in addressing common regional and global challenges. Therefore, the process of international integration being strongly promoted in East Asia in general and ASEAN in particular is of special importance.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized that an indispensable component of this process is the effort to strengthen economic connectivity and linkages among ASEAN continental countries or the Mekong region, including the formation of transnational economic corridors. However, for these corridors to meet expectations and truly become prosperous economic corridors, in addition to the efforts of the governments of the countries, the support of development partners and the participation of the private sector are essential.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung called on businesses to invest in economic and social development projects in localities along the corridor for the benefit of businesses, the community, and the entire region. He also affirmed that the Vietnamese government is ready to engage in dialogue with businesses to further improve and create a transparent and favorable business environment that ensures the interests of all parties.
Strongly promote economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Thein Sein affirmed their commitment to further developing existing cooperation mechanisms between the two countries and pledged to further promote economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Thein Sein also agreed to expand cooperation between the two countries in other potential areas such as mining, aviation, and construction; support Myanmar in developing agriculture, aquaculture, and seafood processing; and create favorable conditions for the implementation of licensed Vietnamese investment projects in Myanmar.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's successful trip to the 2013 WEF East Asia affirmed Vietnam's active participation in WEF activities in particular, and its proactive and positive international integration policy in general. This contributed to promoting Vietnam's image, enhancing its role and position in the region, and fostering cooperation between Vietnam and the WEF. Simultaneously, it strongly promoted cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar in the fields of economics, trade, and investment.
