Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrives in Bangkok (Thailand)

On the evening of December 19th, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Vietnamese delegation arrived in Bangkok to attend the 5th Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS 5) Summit at the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, Prayut Chan-ocha.

Welcoming Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at the airport, on the Thai side were Minister of Culture Vira Rojpojchanarat, leaders of the GMS Organizing Committee, the Thai Ambassador to Vietnam, and representatives of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the Vietnamese side, Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Nguyen Tat Thanh and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand welcomed the delegation.

The Vietnamese delegation's participation in GMS 5 demonstrates Vietnam's appreciation for the GMS mechanism; affirms Vietnam's role and enhances its position in sub-regional cooperation, promotes regional cooperation and friendly relations between Vietnam and the Mekong sub-region countries; promotes and leverages priority cooperation areas consistent with socio-economic development orientations, garners strong international support for efforts to manage and sustainably utilize Mekong River water resources; and strengthens the Vietnam-Thailand strategic partnership…

The Greater Mekong Subregion Cooperation Programme, established in 1992 at the initiative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is the most comprehensive cooperation programme within the Mekong Subregion, encompassing Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and the two provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi (China).

Vietnam has actively participated in GMS cooperation since the initiative was first launched and has also been a major beneficiary of this cooperation. As of June 2014, Vietnam had participated in GMS loan projects with a total projected capital of approximately US$4.7 billion, including projects in transportation, electricity, health, environment, tourism, agriculture, and urban development along the economic corridor…

Vietnam has participated in approximately 130 Regional Technical Assistance (RETA) projects, with ADB and other development partners providing over US$120 million in support. Currently, Vietnam is a crucial link in the GMS transport corridors and a gateway for the North-South and East-West economic corridors, playing a vital role in implementing the GMS's "Competitive, Connected and Community Energy Strategy".

According to the program, the leaders of the six GMS countries will begin their official meeting on the morning of December 20th. This will be an opportunity for the leaders to discuss measures to promote economic cooperation in the Mekong sub-region, an area with a total population of 300 million people and great potential to become a driving force for the global economy.
