The Vietnamese leader's trip will last until June 8, combining an official visit to Japan and attendance at the 23rd Conference on the Future of Asia in Tokyo, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc arrived in Japan shortly after the Japanese Emperor and Empress visited Vietnam for the first time in March this year. The Prime Minister then emphasized that this event opened a new chapter in the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Vietnam and Japan established an extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia in early 2014 and signed the Joint Vision Statement on Vietnam-Japan relations in 2015.

Japan is Vietnam's fourth largest trading partner with trade turnover last year reaching 30 billion USD, and is the second largest foreign investor with more than 1,600 operating enterprises with capital of up to 42 billion USD.

Japan is also the largest provider of official development assistance to Vietnam and the two countries are jointly implementing many large-scale projects in Vietnam, especially in the fields of infrastructure and energy.
