On the morning of October 26, at the National Convention Center (Hanoi), the 8th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Cooperation Summit (CLMV8) and the 7th Ayeyawady-Chaopraya-Mekong Strategic Cooperation Summit (ACMECS 7) opened.

The conference was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Decho Hun Sen, Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Myanmar President Htin Kyaw, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand Somkid Jatusripitak Ms. Shamshad Akhtar Detho, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Secretary-General of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Le Luong Minh, along with leaders of countries, development partners, and businesses.

Speaking at the opening session, on behalf of the Vietnamese people, along with Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sympathized with the Thai people about the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Prime Minister stated that after more than a decade of operation, the Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Cooperation and the Ayeyawadi-Chaopraya-Mekong Strategic Cooperation have achieved many important results, contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of each country, contributing to the process of building the ASEAN Community, consolidating good neighborly relations, peace and stability in the region.

The Mekong countries have become an important driving force of the Southeast Asian economy and are considered one of the most dynamic growth regions in the world. The Prime Minister said that these results demonstrate the determination and efforts of the five countries and are also the result of the great support and effective cooperation of development partners and international donors, especially ASEAN.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stated: "We are facing favorable development opportunities for the development of CLMV and ACMECS. In today's Conferences, we will discuss the new development environment and agree on the contents and cooperation measures to build a dynamic, competitive, sustainable and inclusive economic region. The Vietnamese Government attaches great importance to CLMV and ACMECS cooperation and is ready to closely coordinate with member countries as well as development partners for peace, stability, sustainable development and common prosperity of the region."

The theme of the 8th CLMV Summit is “Seizing Opportunities, Shaping the Future”; the theme of the 7th ACMECS Summit is “Towards a Dynamic and Prosperous Mekong Subregion”.

These themes demonstrate the common goal of the countries to build a peaceful and prosperous Mekong Sub-region, highlighting the dynamism and ability to seize new opportunities of the Mekong countries as well as the need to innovate and determine the appropriate direction for cooperation in the coming period.
