According to RT, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico recently stated that NATO has no reason to send troops to Ukraine because the country is not a member of the bloc.

Mr Fico's comments came after French President Emmanuel Macron's interview with the Economist earlier this week, in which he once again refused to rule out the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine.

The issue of deploying troops from the US-led bloc to Ukraine would arise “if the Russians make a breakthrough on the front line” and if Kiev asked for help from the US-led military alliance, Mr Macron said.

For his part, Mr. Fico told the Slovak parliament on Monday that Mr. Macron's statements would bring the world closer to World War III.

“Ukraine is not a NATO member state,” he reminded the French president. The prime minister added that Macron did not speak for the entire bloc and that his statements about the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine “are no one else’s business but France’s.”

Prime Minister Fico pledged: “Slovakia has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine and let me send a clear message to all of Slovakia: whoever may ask us, no Slovak soldier will set foot outside the Slovakia-Ukraine border.”

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on May 3 that a NATO member sending troops to Ukraine would be a “dangerous escalation”.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto agreed with the Slovak Prime Minister's remarks, warning that such a move could lead to World War III.

Since becoming prime minister of EU and NATO member Slovakia in October 2023, Mr. Fico has reversed the previous government's policy of supplying weapons to Ukraine and firmly insisted on the need for a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

Moscow has repeatedly warned the West against sending troops to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram on May 3 that NATO forces would be “left with nothing” if they were sent to the front lines.
