An angry mob threw stones and bottles, forcing Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic to abandon a ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Srebenica disaster, which killed 8,000 Muslims in Bosnia on July 11.

Prime Minister Vucic had barely managed to lay a flower at the memorial for the Bosnian Muslim men, including children, murdered in Europe's worst humanitarian disaster since World War II, when the crowd began shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) and throwing stones at him.

Vucic's bodyguards had to use umbrellas to shield the Prime Minister and escort him away from the memorial site.

The ceremony, attended by thousands of people including former US President Bill Clinton, took place in a city in eastern Bosnia.

The Bosnian President's office condemned the stone-throwing incident and apologized to the international delegates attending the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic described the attack as "not only targeting Mr. Vucic but also against all Serbs and against the policy of peace and regional cooperation."

EU Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini had previously praised Vucic's historic decision to attend the memorial ceremony on July 11.

According to AFP, the Srebenica massacre took place during the final stages of the Bosnian war. Approximately 8,000 Muslims were killed by Bosnian Serb forces in July 1997.
