Losing the second leg, Atletico still entered the Europa League semi-finals

Buoyed by their Champions League comeback, Sporting played well against Atletico. The home team opened the scoring in the first half, when Fredy Montero headed past goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the 28th minute.

If Sporting had not missed another chance in the first minute of stoppage time, they could have made a comeback. Gelson Martins was the player who made the Portuguese fans regret when he headed the ball over the bar from a very open position.

Controlling the game from the start of the second half, Atletico played more steadily. The away team not only limited Sporting's attacks, but also created many counter-attacks towards goalkeeper Rui Patricio's goal.

If Fernando Torres had not pushed the ball too long in the breakthrough situation in the 72nd minute, the score of the second leg could have been 1-1. Antoine Griezmann also caused a surprise when he missed two chances to face Patricio in the 81st and 83rd minutes.

Atletico held on to a 0-1 deficit until the end of the match, securing a ticket to the semi-finals thanks to a narrow 2-1 aggregate victory. The Madrid team still has a chance to end the season with a title, after being eliminated from the King's Cup and losing ground in La Liga.

The other three teams in the semi-finals with Atletico are Arsenal, Marseille and Salzburg. The draw for the Europa League semi-finals will take place alongside the Champions League on the afternoon of April 13.
