Newly published research suggests that eating "fiery" foods like chili peppers may help us live longer.

There is ample evidence from experimental studies showing that spicy seasonings or the ingredients in spicy seasonings have a positive effect on human health.

As a result, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences studied data collected through self-reported questionnaires, analyzing the consumption of spicy foods by nearly half a million people aged 30-70 across different regions of China, excluding those with cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

They then reviewed the records of 20,224 people who had died over a period of seven years and found that those who ate spicy food six or seven times a week had a 14% lower risk of premature death from natural causes compared to those who ate spicy food less than once a week. Those who regularly consumed foods with a variety of spices also showed a reduced risk of death from cancer or ischemic heart disease and respiratory illnesses.

Researchers are interested in the benefits of capsaicin, a bioactive compound in chili peppers, which is linked to health benefits such as increased fat burning. Folk medicine also suggests capsaicin may help fight infections and stimulate the kidneys, lungs, and heart.

There are only a few risks associated with eating spicy food. Spicy foods can worsen colds or sinus infections, increase your runny nose, and sometimes put pressure on the bladder, causing leakage.

There are many ways to prepare and combine spicy foods without overdoing it. Additionally, consuming other spicy condiments can offer similar health benefits to chili peppers because spicy foods tend to have higher concentrations of phenolics, which are valuable nutrients and anti-inflammatory compounds.
