At a recent agricultural fair in Ho Chi Minh City, many visitors were excited to see a bunch of red bananas in real life for the first time. However, the booth staff said that because the bananas have a strange and rare color, the selling price is high, about... 40,000 VND/kg, not 300,000 VND/kg as advertised on websites.

The truth is that the price of red bananas is only about 40,000 VND/kg.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ma Duong, the owner of the red banana bunch displayed at the fair, said that his garden in Phu Rieng district (Binh Phuoc province) is selling red banana seedlings for 100,000 VND/tree.

"I have grown this banana tree for several years and everyone likes it because of its beautiful appearance. When the banana is not ripe, it is purple, when ripe it turns purple-red, and it is also very delicious. I do not sell tissue-cultured banana seedlings but sell seedlings grafted from the mother banana bush in the traditional way, so it is very easy to grow. This is a new variety of tree, the output is not clear yet, so I have not promoted its development yet" - Mr. Duong acknowledged.

Unripe red bananas have a beautiful purple color, suitable for display and decoration. Developing large areas to sell bananas for food should be considered because the price of seeds is too high.

The rumor that the price of red bananas is sky high is mainly to sell high priced seedlings.

According to the director of a banana export company in Dong Nai, with the price of seeds reaching 100,000 - 200,000 VND/tree while tissue culture banana seeds are usually only 12,000 VND/tree, growing red bananas is only suitable for ornamental purposes or for fun. Because with new fruits, the consumption market is quite narrow, so investment capital should only be invested when the output is certain.
