Contraceptive pills for men
The drug, expected to be launched in 2021, only needs to be used a few minutes before sex and is effective in preventing pregnancy for men.
Developed by a team of experts from the University of Wolverhampton (UK) in collaboration with Portuguese scientists, the new male contraceptive pill is based on a cell-penetrating peptide compound. It prevents sperm from swimming and coming into contact with the egg.
"The results were surprising and almost immediate," the Telegraph quoted Professor John Howl, who led the project. "When healthy sperm were exposed to this compound, they were unable to move within minutes." The drug has now been tested on bull and human sperm. It is expected to be tested on live animals in the next three years and will be available in pill or spray form.

Professor of Reproductive Health John Guillebaud from University College London said the male contraceptive pill "is of great benefit to many couples", especially in cases where the woman cannot take the pill for medical reasons. It also gives men control over their fertility, avoiding the situation where their partner lies about using the pill to deliberately conceive a child.
